Girmitiyas mark 130th Anniversary
Fiji born Australian film producer Satish Rai has produced a documentary "In Exile At Home" on the history of Indians in Fiji since 1897, till the coup of 1987 marked the mass exodus of Indians in Fiji.
He also produced a feature film "Ek Pal-The Unforgettable Moment."
He believes all residents of Fiji should see these films as they are expected to release two films today to mark the 130th anniversary of the Girmitiyas.
The first screening of these two films will take place this evening at FIT theatre at Raiwasa.
On 14th May 1879, the Leonidas a labour transport vessel, disembarked at Levuka from Calcutta with the first 463 indentured labourers.
The contracts of the indentured labourers, which they called girmit, required them to work in Fiji for a period of five years.
The indentured labour system was cancelled on 1st January 1920.
