Chairman of the Constitutional Commission, Professor Yash Ghai has called on all Fijians to fully participate in the constitution making process which will begin with consultations from next month.

Professor Ghai who is currently in the country said he has already had initial discussions on the setting up of the commission and possible options on the funding of their work.


He also said that he will go through certain decrees highlighted by certain groups that there are some restrictions for them to meet without a permit.

Professor Ghai said rights are not absolute and people also need to realize that some public gatherings may require a notification.


A civic education programme will commence for the people of the country soon. The next phase will be the constitution consultations.

From October to the end of December this year, the commission will collate the public submissions.

Based on the guiding principles, the commission will draft a constitution to be submitted to a Constituent Assembly in January next year.
