In light of the Qawa river pollution, the Department of Environment has called on all industries and Commercial businesses to get permits before discharging any waste into rivers or face the consequence.

Director Environment, Epeli Nasome said under the Environment Act 2005, industries require a permit to discharge any waste into the river or anywhere else for that matter.

He stresses those who do not get permits by 1st January 2009, will be facing consequences.

Nasome adds the permit and the related standards once in place will enable authorities like the Department of Environment and Labasa Town Council to monitor the level of waste being discharged.

He said if the waste exceeds the established standards, then this means non-compliance and appropriate action would be taken. The penalties for non-compliance goes upto $750,000 depending on the seriousness of the pollution.
