Fiji is sitting on a hotspot for geothermal energy, which is being commercially tapped, for first time and interim minister for Mineral Resources confirmed that two companies had been given the green light to start exploration work as soon as possible.
Netani Sukanaivalu told FijiVillage that there was enough evidence to show that geothermal energy, the underground hot rocks and hot springs, can be harnessed in Fiji and may lead to easing the use of fossil fuels.
Sukanaivalu confirmed that while the Geothermal Electrical Company had been issued a license, they expect to issue a second exploration license this month to Australian Based Mitchell Morgan Investments. He confirmed that five separate sites in Vanua Levu have been identified.
He also confirmed that a site has been identified in Tavua on Viti Levu for exploration.
