The Queensland Reds half back Will Genia has edged out team mate Quade Cooper by two votes to win the Australian Super Rugby player of the year award.

Melbourne Rebels half back Nick Phipps was rookie of the year while Sydney based Stuart Dickinson was the referee of the year.

The result in the major award reversed last year’s player of the year, where Cooper prevailed with Genia coming in second.

Genia joined the likes of John Eales, George Smith, Stephen Larkham, Stirling Mortlock and retiring Waratahs captain Phil Waugh in winning the Australian Super Rugby player of the year.

Meanwhile in the Super Rugby play offs: the Blues take on the Waratahs at 7.35pm tonight while the Sharks take on the Crusaders tomorrow night at 7.35.
