All Blacks wing Hosea Gear missed out on the last chapter of the New Zealand-France rugby rivalry in the 15s code, but after playing a sparing part on the opening day of New Zealand Sevens yesterday, he may be unleashed yet again today.

Gear skipped the first match, grabbed a brace against Japan and just a couple of minutes against Samoa and along with big Bryce Heem, will have fresh legs for the run at the title.

New Zealand Sevens coach, Gordon Tietjens was not giving much away, but his smile said more than words as he surveyed his side’s run through pool play after a shaky start against Scotland.

The cup quarter-finals starts at 1.33pm with New Zealand playing France, at 1.55pm England will meet Tonga, Canada faces Samoa at 2.17pm while the South Africa and Fiji game is at 2.39pm.
