The members of the Great Council of Chiefs maintain that their decision to discontinue their case against the Interim Fijian Affairs Minister is based on the understanding that any amendments to the GCC governing legislation be left to an elected government.

At a press conference earlier today, GCC member and Tui Tavua Ratu Ovini Bokini said that their decision to terminate the case was conditional on the respondents agreeing to cease all amendments to the Fijian Affairs Act, Fijian Affairs Board, Provincial Councils, village and tikina regulations until a new government is elected.

He also said that they understand that the interim governments reinstate arrangements for support for the GCC and preserve the substantial independence and functioning of the Council.

However, State Lawyer Adish Narayan said this is not true. According to Narayan the case was dropped after consultations between the two parties and an agreement being reached on the need to amend parts of the Fijian Affairs Act.
