The Fiji Electricity Authority said the fuel surcharge rate increase will help them recover some of their losses.

Chief executive Hasmukh Patel said the fuel surcharge increase will assist in recovering some of the losses they have already incurred as a result of high thermal fuel cost and usage during the period June 2008 - November 2008.

Cabinet yesterday approved the increase of the fuel surcharge rate from 2.83 cents to 5.53 cents per unit, an increase of 2.7 cents per unit.

Those that use less than 75 units per month or $15 per month or less, do not have to pay this fuel surcharge rate.

About 23% of domestic consumers who consume between 75 and 125 units per month, are charged only 50% of the surcharge rate while industrial consumers who make up 26% and commercial customers who make up 43% of Fiji's electricity sales, will be charged with the full fuel surcharge rate.
