The 28-19 French 7s team famous win over Fiji in Paris back in 2005 was the last time France held an IRB World 7s tournament title.

With more than 7 years passing since that win, French Ambassador to Fiji Gilles Montagnier said he is pessimistic about the French team’s chances of winning the Gold Coast 7s title because of the lack of competition in France and Europe.

Montagnier added while he is unsure of how Fiji will fair in the Gold Coast 7s, he does believe Fiji will get a medal in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in 2016 and probably win the gold medal.

France is pooled with Wales, Argentina and Portugal in the Gold Coast 7s.

Meanwhile, the national 7s team will be leaving for Australia in the next hour and will play their first game against Scotland at 2.42pm on Saturday.
