No government can provide free water.
Those were the comments by Fiji Labour Party leader, Mahendra Chaudhry during their campaign meeting at Riverside Road, Narere yesterday.
About 40 people were present at the meeting.
Responding to a question raised by a resident, Chaudhry said this is wrong and no government can provide free water.
Chaudhry asked the people present at the meeting not to get trapped into it as this is a vote buying exercise.
Meanwhile, during a campaign meeting at Davuilevu Methodist Primary School, FijiFirst party leader Voreqe Bainimarama revealed that plans are in the pipeline to make water free for all homes in the country.
He had also said that costs are now being worked out to see if the government can provide free water.
According to the 2013 constitution, the state must take reasonable measures within its available resources to achieve the progressive realization of the right of every person to be free from hunger, to have adequate food of acceptable quality and to clean and safe water in adequate quantities.
In applying any such right, if the state claims that it does not have the resources to implement the right, it is the responsibility of the state to show that the resources are not available.
