The free water initiative for Fijians earning less than a total income of $30,000 will be starting from the 1st of next month.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama confirmed this during the opening of the refurbished Vatukarasa Health Center in Nadroga yesterday.

Bainimarama said every household with a combined income of less than $30,000 a year will get an allocation of free water based on an international standard of how much water a person needs every day which is 50 litres.

He also said that each household based on an average of five people a house will get up to a maximum of 250 litres free per day.

The Prime Minister said this only applies to people who are connected to Water Authority of Fiji.

However, he has given assurance that they are working to get every Fijian connected as soon as possible so that they can take advantage of the initiative.

Bainimarama said in the next couple of days there will be advertisements urging households who qualify to register with Water Authority of Fiji to take advantage of the program.

It was announced during the 2015 National Budget that the government will provide 91,250 litres of water free of charge to Fijian households earning less than a total annual income of $30,000.
