The Education Ministry's new initiative of providing free textbooks to some primary school students from next year is another means of ensuring all children in Fiji get quality education.
Education Minister Filipe Bole told Fijivillage that the free text book program has been in the pipe line for a number of years and now they will ensure it is implemented when schools open next year.
Bole adds initially, selected primary schools will be provided free text books and they hope to implement the program in all primary schools by 2011 before the secondary schools are targeted.
Bole reveals that the initial implementation of the program will cost around $400,000 to get off the ground.

The Education Ministry is embarking on a project of providing free textbooks to all students from next year.
In a statement, the provision of free textbooks is expected to be carried out in phases and will start with primary schools in certain districts.
It is expected to cover all primary schools by 2011 while secondary schools will be receiving free text books by 2012
The Ministry views this assistance as bringing another sigh of relief for parents as they can now concentrate on other items such as student lunches, uniforms and school stationery.
The whole exercise is geared towards providing free education for all students.
