The Immigration Department has stressed that the anomalies highlighted in the Public Accounts Committee report on fraudulent practices within the department have been rectified.

The Committee's scrutiny of the Auditor General’s report of 2004/2005 into the Immigration Department, found that work permits were provided to illegal immigrants while there were numerous cases where work permits were obtained through fraudulent declarations and deceptive means by directly approaching the Minister responsible.

It also noted that some immigration officers delayed the issuance of removal orders to illegal immigrants, while numerous work permit files were missing or had been tampered with and deliberately concealed in order to influence a decision.

However, Immigration Director Nemani Vuniwaqa said the Committee has been informed that such practices have since been eradicated.
