Thailand's former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is reported to be either in Fiji or on his way to Fiji.
Thailand's The Nation newspaper said Shinawatra, whose Thai passport has been cancelled, may be considering setting up a base in Fiji because it has no extradition treaty with Thailand.
Minister for Defence and Immigration Ratu Epeli Ganilau told Fijivillage news that, while he is unaware where Shinawatra is, any application from him will be dealt with in the normal process.
Thaksin Shinawatra who faces a jail sentence for a conflict of interest charge if he returns to Thailand, was in Fiji late last year and met with Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
It was reported soon after that Shinawatra was considering investing a substantial amount of money in Fiji.
