A former PWD Hydrologist Faga Finiasi was today handed a suspended sentence after he had pleaded guilty to official corruption.

However, the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption was granted a stay on the sentence soon after as they intend to appeal the sentence in pursuit of a custodial sentence for Finiasi.

Finiasi admitted to accepting $380 from his staff members in return for approving overtime for them.

Suva Magistrate Elsie Hudson sentenced Finiasa to 40 months imprisonment and suspended it for 24 months.

She also ordered that since the Magistrates court cannot exceed a 24 month suspended sentence, Finiasi is to pay a fine of $500 to cover for the remaining months he would have spend behind bars.

FICAC Laywer Aca Rayawa made an application for stay, which was granted to allow them to appeal the sentence in the High Court.
