Former Commissioner Central case continues
Devo, who is charged with abuse of office, had his statement read out in court today.
In the statement, Devo claimed that on one occasion when he asked his driver to go to a shop in Nakelo to pick up some fish, he had paid $150 for the fish and the beer which was given to him was given by the owner of the shop on his own free will.
Devo also admitted that he did request his driver and his office supervisor, Alumita to pick up liquor from various outlets and night clubs for their office party.
Devo stated that they only requested liquor from those who were willing to donate in the spirit of Christmas and no one was forced or coerced into doing so.
In his statement, Devo also admitted to arranging alcohol for an election workshop held at the Trade Winds Hotel in Lami.
He told the FICAC officers that there was no official after function arranged for the workshop and upon request from the other participants he requested Alumita to make arrangements to collect liquor from outlet willing to donate it for the purpose.
He said he took full responsibility for it and all donations were made on a voluntary basis.
Meanwhile, the owner of Purple Haze Night Club, Ashwin Gopal gave evidence that he also gave alcohol to Alumita from the Commissioner Office.
He said Alumita was his friend and so he obliged to her request for alcohol.
However, there were inconsistencies highlighted in his evidence in court and that given to FICAC.
Gopal could not remember exactly how many bottles of alcohol he had given to Alumita and this point was highlighted to the Judge by the defence counsel.
The case continues tomorrow.
