A 26 year old Tongan National appeared before Magistrate Eparama Rokoika today charged with allegedly raping a 24 year old woman at the Suva foreshore on Friday night.

No plea was taken today by 26 year old Saia Naua who is a seamen of a fishing vessel which is berthed at the Suva Harbour.

DPP Counsel told the court that the State opposes bail for the accused and they will be ready to proceed with the trial within 7 to 14 days.

The accused is remanded in custody and the case is adjourned to the 15th of this month.

It is alleged that the accused met the victim and invited her to have barbecue and lured them to the Suva seawall. He then allegedly raped the victim and threw her over the seawall, into the sea.

The victim was rescued by some bystanders near the seawall and taken to CWM hospital.
