Emergency food rations and water will be supplied to people in the areas worst affected by the current drought if the need arises in the days and weeks ahead.
DISMAC Acting Director Pajiliai Dobui said the packs are being prepared and will be handed out if people do not have enough food to eat as many cash and other crops have been severely affected by the drought.
However, Dobui stressed this will depend on what transpires over the next few days and they are putting their contingency plans in place.
A number of task forces have been set up to provide the Prime Ministers Office with twice daily situation reports before Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama is expected to make a decision on whether to declare a drought for Fiji.
The drought Situation report obtained by Fijivillage states that hydrological drought has been in place some 8 - 9 months ago over Fiji for majority of their monitoring stations including Viwa, Yasawa-i-rara, Nacocolevu, Nadi Airport, Rarawai, Penang, Vatukoula, Suva, Navua, Savusavu, Lakeba and Matuku.
It said stations which came into the drought warning are Dobuilevu, Koronivia, Monasavu, Nausori Airport, Udu Point, Vunisea and Vanubalavu.
The report said the dry season has still got some 2 - 3 months to go and they do not anticipate any marked improvement during this time.
It said the drought is expected to break in December 2010 to January 2011 with two months of normal wet season rainfall.
