There were smiles on the face of 39-year-old Manoj Kumar who received a $30 Food Voucher from the Social Welfare Department today just in time to do his Diwali shopping.
Kumar who resides in the Wainibuku Hart Subdivision has been receiving assistance from government for the past three months after one of his legs was amputated due to diabetes.
Kumar used to be a market vendor in Suva but is now self-employed to support his elderly mother.
He added some people with both hands and legs are lazy nowadays, saying they should work hard for their family rather than only asking for assistance.
Government had started giving added assistance to the poor like food vouchers, bus fare assistance and text books for children from this year.
