Flood waters enter Rakiraki shops
Rakiraki resident Sanjeet Maharaj said there is 4 feet of flood water in Rakiraki town and it is likely that with the high tide in the next few minutes, water levels are expected to rise.
A number of areas are now under flood waters in Rakiraki.
DISMAC Office Rakiraki confirms that the FSM Mill road, Waimari settlement and Nagoro flats are under three feet of flood waters.
They confirm that four families from Qelema settlement have moved to relatives homes in Wairuku to take shelter as they felt that their home was not strong enough to sustain the strong winds currently being experienced.
DISMAC said they cannot establish at this stage which other areas in Rakiraki are under flood waters.
Meanwhile, there is flooding in some parts of Korovou town as strong winds and heavy rain continues.
Korovou Hospital Dr Tuiloma said that power cuts have also affected the Korovou hospital as they now have to rely on candles.
Dr Tuiloma added that 4 patients are admitted at Korovou Hospital.
The roofs of two homes in the village of Wainimala in Naitasiri have been blown away by strong winds and village head-man Enereko Tui-matua said that they are currently feeling the full brunt of Cyclone Gene.
He added that everyone in the village have been advised to stay in their homes as they continue to feel strong winds.
