A flood alert remains in force for the low lying areas of Nadi town and Votualevu.

Forecasters at the Nadi Weather Office say the Votualevu and Nadi river levels continue to rise. 

Levels at 7am today show that Votualevu and Nadi river are about to reach the warning level. 

The critical level is five meters however, at 7am the Votualevu river level was at 4.14 meters and the Nadi river level stood at 3.75 meters. 

The weather office is closely monitoring the situation and will issue a flood warning once the water is about to reach the critical level.

The high tide was at 5.30am and the next high tide will be at 5.30pm.

A heavy rain warning remains in force for the whole of the Fiji group. 

This may lead to flash flooding in a number of areas.

A strong wind warning remains in force for all land areas of Fiji and Rotuma.

An active trough of low pressure remains over Fiji. 

Meanwhile another trough of low pressure to the west of Fiji is gradually moving towards the group.

Associated rain and strong winds are expected to affect the group till tomorrow.
 
Strong northwesterly winds is expected with average speeds of 45 to 55km/hr and momentary gusts to 90km/hr. 

Rain is expected to start easing and clearing from the west from tomorrow night. 

Seas are expected to be rough to very rough.

Since 9am yesterday, Nadi received 153.5mm of rainfall, Lautoka received 149.5mm, Rakiraki received 137.5 mm and Yasawa-I-Rara received 63.3mm.

The next special weather bulletin on heavy rain will be issued at midday today.

Number of areas now affected by rising flood waters in Nadi
 
A number of areas are now affected by rising flood waters in Nadi and people in the western division have been advised to take necessary precautions.

Areas affected are Nadi Back Road from Ratu Naevo Link Road to Tatas Restaurant, Nawajikuma Settlement, Namulomulo, Navakai, Togomasi and nearby low lying areas. 

Qeleloa bridge is also under water.

Evacuation centres have been activated if you are living in low lying areas in Nadi. 

The evacuation centres are St Andrews Primary School, Nadi College, Nadi Muslim College and Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College.

Please take necessary precautions as the heavy rain warning is in force for the whole of Fiji.

Schools in west closed due to current weather conditions

All schools in the Western Division will be closed today due to the current weather conditions.

This is according to the Ministry of Education Permanent Secretary Dr. Brij Lal.

Dr. Lal said school heads in the West are to keep a very close eye to see if any children are in school and if they are then they should be sent back home.

He said if other parts of the division’s are also experiencing heavy rain then school heads should make a decision whether to open the school.

Dr. Lal added that school heads and parents should continue to monitor the weather situation.
