Stakeholders in the fishing industry in Fiji say the industry could be teetering on the verge of collapse within the next 24 hours if the 3 percent export duty on unprocessed fish announced in the budget is not withdrawn.
Fiji Fish director Graham Southwick confirmed they are now getting mixed responses on the status of the 3 percent duty which is to come into effect from January 1st, 2009.
Southwick also revealed that many fishing vessels are leaving Fiji and the industry could end up on the brink of collapse if the matter is not resolved in the next 24 hours.
Fiji Islands Revenue and Customs Authority CEO Jitoko Tikolevu when contacted on the matter confirmed that some decisions have been taken on the matter but he has to be briefed by his officials before making further comments.
