Some people living in Labasa who depend on fish as a source of income claim that they were yesterday told by some villagers to pay a sum of $500 if they wanted to cross from Macuata which is the usual route for the boats.
According to Abhay Nand of Labasa they had already paid a sum of $1500 for their license to fish in the Lekutu area however they were stopped by villagers and were asked to pay another $500.
Nand claimed yesterday afternoon that the villagers had also confiscated the fish which was caught by the fishermen.
Meanwhile, Police Media Liasion Officer, Atunaisa Sokomuri confirms that a report has been lodged with the Labasa Police Station and they have started their investigations.
The Tui Macuata Ratu Aisea Katonivere is yet to comment on the matter.
