Fisheries wardens in the Kadavu province will undergo training to enhance their skills in managing their traditional fishing ground.

Fishing ground owners voiced their concerns at the amount of illegal fishing conducted in Kadavu waters and has requested training for wardens to carry out their duties effectively.

Minister for Primary Industries Joketani Cokanasiga said that it is a known fact that most of the fish sold at the Suva market are caught illegally and the Ministry is working on strategy to strengthen the network of Fisheries Warden especially in outer islands.

Kadavu has close to a hundred wardens with a majority already trained with the responsibilities that come with the job.

Fisheries officer Aporosa Rabo said some fishermen who have been caught fishing illegally have been warned. The matter has also been reported to police.
