The first of the relief flights left for Labasa this afternoon.

The New Zealand Air Force C130 “Kiwi 698” aircraft arrived at the Nausori airport to conduct aerial surveys and distribute relief supplies to Labasa.

NZ Foreign Minister Murray McCulley has also confirmed that the NZ government has pledged $1 million towards the relief efforts.

Meanwhile, donor agencies are expected to meet with DISMAC officials today to discuss the immediate assistance needed in the cyclone affected areas.

DISMAC's operation officer Anthony Blake said Red Cross is the primary provider for immediate relief efforts on the ground whilst the assessments are continuing.

Blake said the immediate needs for the affected areas include tents and emergency shelters, water storage containers and water purification tablets and emergency morgues.
