Firefighters Battle PAFCO Fire
The fire started before midday and Levuka residents who have called Fijivillage said they are worried as a service station is located near the burning engineering room.
The room was PAFCO's old operations centre.
Most of the areas in Levuka are also experiencing power cuts.
The National Fire Authority’s chief fire officer Mark Reid said the fire at PAFCO's old engineering room had spread quickly and firefighters are still trying to contain the fire.
However, firefighters were able to contain the fire facing the ocean side of the PAFCO factory.
Reid added that firefighters are still keeping an eye on the service station and restaurants located near the scene.
Meanwhile, Reid said the fire that destroyed a four bedroom house at Cheng Place, Raiwai, this morning could have been caused by an electrical fault.
However, Mark Reid said it cannot be confirmed at this stage as investigators will be at the scene this afternoon.
Reid added that the fire hydrant near the house was defective.
Owner Samisoni Bale said he was inside the house with his wife and two grandchildren when the fire started.
They managed to escape without injury.
