It is the first day of fire safety week and already seven people are homeless after a fire incident in Naikabula, Lautoka, this morning.

The National Fire Authority said they received a call around 8 this morning and when the fire fighters arrived at the scene, the three bedroom house was fully engulfed in flames.

According to NFA, the fire started from the kitchen as the cooking was left unattended.

The family was in the sitting room when they heard an explosion and upon reaching the kitchen the fire had started.

The house was fully destroyed in the fire.

No one was injured.

Meanwhile, acting chief executive Jone Koroi said they will use this week to remind people of the dangers of fires.

Koroi added every year an average of 33% of homes are destroyed by fires because of carelessness.
