Fire fighters mark national day
These are the sentiments of National Fire Authority chief executive Josefa Gavidi on today being International Fire Fighters Day.
Gavidi said their line of work is always unpredictable.
Seasoned firefighter and NFA station officer Semisi Tabuanivalu said the most challenging and heart wrenching case he has attended is when two boys died in a fire in Wailoku.
In the history of the NFA, there has been only one recorded death of a fire fighter during the course of duty.
May 4th used to be a traditional fire fighter's day in many European countries as it was the day of Saint Florien, the patron saint of firefighters who was the first known commander of one firefighting squad in the Roman Empire and lost his life protecting others lives and property.
Fire stations around the country today display red and blue ribbons in recognizing their service, red for fire and blue for water.
