Up to 12 lives are lost each year and tens of millions of dollars in damages are sustained due to preventable fires.
As the National Fire Authority started to implement its strategic plan, Chief Fire Officer Mark Reid said they had estimated that the total cost of losses due to fires amounted to about one percent of the gross domestic product.
Reid also revealed that they had established that many home owners did not give priority to fire insurance and in several cases people were not able to recover from the losses.
Reid said they were currently working with group’s classified as large risks including schools, factories and major business outlets as well as town and city councils to improve fire safety and prevention measures.
