More than 15,000 Class Eight students throughout the country will be sitting the last Fiji Eighth Year Examination this Wednesday and Thursday.

Education Minister Filipe Bole said they had abolished the examinations as it acted  as a strainer in the students' process as those who passed their examination moved on to the next level, a substantial number of students drop out of school.

Bole said it is expected that the school roll will be higher as no one is expected to drop out of school till Form 6 and that parents' financial commitments towards education is expected to be lighter as the ministry is committed to providing assistance in free tuition, free bus fare and now free textbooks.

The results of FEYE are expected to be released sometime at the end of October.

The Fiji Intermediate Examination was abolished last year.

2010 will be the final year for the Fiji Eighth Year, and the Fiji Junior Certificate Examinations.

A total of 15, 131 candidates have registered at 673 centres.
