The final Fiji Eight Year Examinations will be held throughout the country this morning as more than 15,000 class eight students prepare to sit day one of the examinations.

2010 will be the final year for the Fiji Eighth Year to feature as a public examination as well as the Fiji Junior Certificate Examination.

This is after the Education Ministry abolished major external examinations at Primary and secondary school levels to start the twelve year basic education.

Education Minister Filipe Bole said they had abolished the examinations as it acted  as a strainer in the students' process as those who passed their examination moved on to the next level, a substantial number of students drop out of school.

Bole said it is expected that the school roll will be higher as no one is expected to drop out of school till Form 6 and that parents' financial commitments towards education is expected to be lighter as the ministry is committed to providing assistance in free tuition, free bus fare and now free textbooks.

A total of 15, 131 candidates have registered at 673 centres.
