Despite attempts to eliminate lymphatic filarisis with distribution of free tablets, health officials are in the dark as to the reasons why the infection is still prevalent in Rotuma, Lakeba and the Moala islands.
National coordinator for filarisis control center Ravinesh Chetty told Fijivillage that people on these islands are taking the tablets and it is still a mystery as to its prevalence in the eastern division.
Chetty also said they have also seen that people in other centers are reluctant to take the filarisis prevention tablets which is a major obstacle in trying to achieve their goal of eliminating and destroying all infections in Fiji by 2010.
The next round of the filarisis tablet distribution campaign will be conducted by August next year.
