The Digicel Fiji 7s team’s dream of winning the Melrose Cup for its centennial celebration has been dashed as they lost to New Zealand 17-nil in the semifinal this morning.
The All Blacks 7s team led 12-nil at half time after play was suspended due to bad weather early in the first half.
When the match resumed Fiji failed to find their form with Metuisela Talebula copping a yellow card.
Fiji then defeated Kenya 29-5 in third place play-off.
Meanwhile, New Zealand won the RWC final after thrashing England 33-nil under heavy conditions.
Coach Gordan Titjens said this win is very special to them.
Canada won the Plate, while there was celebration for the hosts Russia who won the Bowl.
In the women’s, the Fijiana 7s team defied all odds as they created history by winning their first ever major title beating Netherlands 12-10 to win the Bowl.
New Zealand was also crowned Women-s Rugby World Cup Sevens champions after a 29-12 win over Canada in a final played in wet conditions.
