Fijians traveling overseas are the most vulnerable to fraudulent activities

Fijians traveling overseas are the most vulnerable to fraudulent activities due to our well known hospitality.

That is the sentiment of National intelligence Bureau Director SSP Henry Brown as he highlights how smart people are now becoming in using unsuspecting people as couriers.

SSP Brown highlighted a case recently where a couple was asked to take a parcel which they were told was yaqona overseas however when they passed through Australian immigration, it was detected that the parcel actually contained drugs packaged in grog packets.

SSP Brown said that one of the issues here is that due to our personality, we tend to believe people however we should always ask questions.

Meanwhile, SSP Brown and the Director Public Prosecutions Aca Rayawa have both highlighted that one of the major concerns in putting an end to the issue of money laundering is the fact that many Government agencies become too territorial.

The two highlighted a case where after a huge multi-million dollar buts, the evidence has been left to rot in Police custody as the various agencies sort out their jurisdiction.

Both SSP Brown and Rayawa have called on Government Agencies to put aside their differences and work towards making successful prosecutions especially since Government has introduced the Crimes Decree.

Rayawa highlighted a case where the Office of the DPP managed to get a search warrant for a yacht which they suspect was engaged in criminal activities however due to the fact that the Ports Authority, Police and DPP were yet to decide what action to take, the yacht along with all the evidence was blown out to sea and later vandalized by fisherman.

At the moment, the office of the DPP is drafting a new Decree to address the issue of interagency co-orporation.
