Fijian As Common Name Would Insult Indigenous Fijians-SDL
National Director Peceli Kinivuwai said this is a very sensitive issue and needs wider and proper consultation.
NGO, ECREA Director Chantelle Khan said it is a good move however it will take time for people to accept a common name.
The largest Hindu Organisation in the country, Shri Sanatan Dharam Prathinidhi Sabha of Fiji has applauded the idea. Secretary Vijendra Prakash said a common name will unite the country.
These comments come after the Chairperson of one of the NCBBF's Taskforce Lorine Tevi said earlier today that after consideration the taskforce came up with the recommendation to have a common name for all that will unite everyone. Tevi said all Fiji citizens would be known as " Fijians" while the indigenous Fijians will be known as the I-Taukei. The recommendation will be in the draft People's Charter which will be made public later today.
