Fiji vulnerable to drug smuggling
This was revealed at a workshop on Drug Identification held at the Border Police Command Centre in Nadi early this week, and was facilitated by Special Agent Joe Kilmer from the Drug Enforcement Administration of the USA Department of Justice and Craig Mann of the Australian Federal Police.
The workshop was attended by members of the Civil Aviation Authority, Airports Fiji Limited, Fiji Inland Revenue and Customs Authority and also the Fiji military Forces.
The one day workshop taught participants on the various illicit drugs available in the drug market today.
Kilmer said Fiji is a very small country and can be targeted by dealers if stakeholders are not aware of the way these drugs and illicit substances are exported around the world.
He said Fiji could be the front line security for countries like Australia, as it is small and many dealers will use Fiji as a passage to deliver their goods through, before getting to these countries as they may be aware of Fiji's flexible security measures.
