Fiji will be one of the first Pacific Island countries to take action on food security when it hosts a national food summit later this year.

The Health Minister Doctor Neil Sharma announced Fiji's intention to host a Fijian food summit at the 8th meeting of the Ministers of Health for the Pacific Island countries in Papua New Guinea.

Dr Sharma told the ministers that climate change, population pressure and global financial upheavals are posing challenges to the availability and affordability of healthy food in Fiji.
He said that the consumption of imported and local foods of poor nutritional quality has increased while the consumption for local foods of high nutritional value has decreased.

The Food Summit will have World Health Organisation's technical support and the WHO representative in the Pacific Dr Chen Ken said that it is important for people to make healthy food choices however it cannot happen the choices are not available in shops.

The National food Summit will look at ways that Fiji can get behind local food production and demand access to a healthier range of locally produced and imported foods.
