Fiji will purchase around 20,000 tonnes of sugar from India to meet the local and regional demands due to the below average performance of our sugar industry this year.
Speaking to Village news, General Manager Viliame Savou confirms that due to the drought which hit the cane belt earlier this year the industry has not been able to meet its quota and they will have to import sugar for the first time in nine years.
Savou was reluctant to reveal the cost factor for importing the sugar but said the deal is beneficial to the entire industry.
He stresses that Fiji has had to import sugar in the past after drought and natural disasters caused extensive damages to cane crops.
