The Fiji 7s team is through to the Rio Olympics Medal Semi Final after beating New Zealand in a nail-biting quarter final by 12-7 in the last hour.

Fijians are celebrating everywhere in the world after this crucial clash that saw the traditional rivals battle hard for a spot in the semi final against Japan tomorrow.

Fiji fought hard to qualify for the semi final as NZ came with it’s best game so far in the competition in the quarter final after losing to Great Britain by 21-19 in the final pool match earlier today.

Fiji captain, Osea Kolinisau led the charge and scored our first try.       

NZ kept up the pressure and Gillies Kaka chipped over near the tryline to score under the posts.

There was a lot of indecisive play at times by Fiji as NZ continued to move up the field to disrupt play.

NZ led Fiji 7-5 at half time.

Coach, Ben Ryan was fired up at half time and told the players that there is no second chance.

Fiji came back strongly in the second half despite many attempts by NZ to disrupt their game.

Fiji’s wonderboy from Newtown, Jerry Tuwai then made something out of nothing and danced through a number of NZ defenders to score Fiji’s second try.

Osea Kolinisau’s conversion took the score to 12-7.

NZ made numerous attempts to upset Fiji’s play but the Ben Ryan coached side held on to book their place in the first ever Olympic 7s semi final

Former England coach, Sir Clive Woodward told World Rugby "Fiji just play the game so differently to anyone else. They are so good at keeping possession. New Zealand have defended brilliantly but Fiji just keep coming..."

Former England 7s captain wrote “Fiji just amazing. Their defensive decisions at the breakdowns won them that game. How often do you hear that about them? Brilliant. You can visibly see Tuisova realise he is un‑tackle-able in open field. This Fiji team are unstoppable with the ball. Never die with it!”

Fiji will take on Japan in the first Medal Semi Final 5.30am tomorrow.

Quarterfinal 2 Report : Japan vs France.

Japan continues to be the biggest surprise in the Rio Olympics 7s competition so far as they have booked a semifinal spot against Fiji in the medal semifinal.

Japan had a strong performance in the second half after trailing France 7-5 at halftime.

Fiji-born Lote Tuqiri scored Japan’s first try 40 seconds into the second half.

Japan won the match at fulltime with a try to Sakai Katsuyuki.

Cler Damian scored France’s only try in the match.

Japan beat Kenya by 31-7 in their final pool match earlier this morning.

Quaterfinal 3 Report : Great Britian vs Argentina

Great Britain will meet South Africa in the semifinal of the Rio Olympics 7s competition after beating Argentina 5-0 in the third Medal Quarter Final.

The two sides were locked at nil-all at full-time as the wet conditions also played a major part in their game.

English rover, Dan Bibby scored the winning try for Great Britain in extra time.

Great Britain will play South Africa at 6am tomorrow.

Quaterfinal 4 Report : South Africa vs Australia

South Africa is through to the semifinals of the Olympics 7s after defeating Australia 22-5 in their quarterfinals.

The Blitzboks ran in four tries against the Australians.

Rosco Specman scored their first try, Seabelo Senatla scored their third and fourth try while captain Kyle Brown had the last say after bulldozing his way to the tryline.

South Africa’s line-up against Australia was Kwagga Smith, Philip Synman, Kyle Brown, Cecil Afrika, Juan de Jongh, Rosco Specman and Seabelo Senatla.

South Africa will face Great Britain at 6am tomorrow in the second medal semifinal.

The Medal Final will kick off at 10am tomorrow.
