Improving and maintaining the defence of the Vodafone Fiji 7s team will be a key focus for Interim coach Nacani Cawanibuka as the team has made it through to the quarterfinals of the Cape Town 7s.
Cawanibuka had earlier admitted that the teams defence was weak in certain areas in the final of the Dubai 7s against South Africa last weekend and they will be aiming to do better this time around.
He says the team has great defence but putting in extra focus and effort is also important.
Fiji will face England in the quarterfinals at 12.10am tomorrow after defeating France 28-19 in their last pool match this morning.
France came in to the last pool match knowing they could qualify for the Cup quarterfinals if they get a five‑point win over Fiji.
In the second minute of play, Fiji's captain Osea Kolinisau was in the right place at the right time to roar under the posts after which the conversion that followed sailed between the posts.
Samisoni Viriviri then extended Fiji's advantage to score again under the posts.
At the stroke of half‑time French forward Pierre Gilles Lakafia powered over as France moved to within two points.
Fiji led 14-7 at half time.
Lakafia then scored his second try from a loose ball at the base of the ruck before his captain Terry Bouhraoua broke the defence again to score their third try to put them at 19-14.
However, Fiji had the perfect riposte after some strong, determined work by Kitione Taliga which allowed Setareki Bituniyata to give them the lead, and Jerry Tuwai completing the job with a show and go.
Onto other results from Fiji’s games, Fiji beat Kenya 28-22 this morning and defeated Japan in their first pool match 33-7 to top pool B while Kenya is in second place.
Meanwhile, in other quarterfinal matches coming up, hosts South Africa take on Wales at 11.04pm tonight, while New Zealand play Kenya at 11.26pm.
Scotland then take on USA at 11.48pm tonight.
The semifinals of the tournament will start at 3.34am tomorrow while the final will be played at 6.44am.
