History will be created today as Fiji will play in its first FIFA Under 20 World Cup.
The Fiji Football Association came into existence in 1961 and since then, Fiji played in a number of FIFA World Cup Qualifications but failed to qualify for the World meet.
But, after a long 54 years, Fiji will play in the FIFA Under 20 finals.
The Vodafone Fiji Under 20 side will today also become the first Fiji soccer team to play at a FIFA World Cup.
Fiji will face Germany today in its first group match and coach, Frank Farina says they will be competitive.
Misiwani Nairube, Jale Dreloa, Nickel Chand, Setareki Hughes, Kolinio Sivoki, Iosefo Verevou and Saula Waqa are some of the players expected to be in Fiji’s starting lineup.
Looking at the results from the weekends Under 20 World Cup matches, New Zealand had a nill all draw with Ukraine, Argentina had a 2 all draw with Panama, USA beat Myanmar 2‑1, Ghana had a 1 all draw with Austria, Colombia beat Qatar 1-0, Mali defeated Mexico 2-0, Portugal thrashed Senegal 3-0 while Uruguay beat Serbia 1-0.
Fiji will play Germany at 1pm today in Christchurch. Fiji’s two other group matches will be against Honduras at 4pm this Thursday and Uzbekistan at 2pm Sunday.
