Fiji will be importing over 40,000 tonnes of sugar this year for local consumption.
Fiji Sugar Marketing Chief Executive Viliame Savou said all sugar produced this year will be exported to EU countries to fulfill their quota.
He adds they have no choice but to import sugar as they is now talking to some sugar producing countries like India to get the costs.
Meanwhile, the Fiji Sugar Marketing Authority has confirmed that there has been a decline of over $100 million in export earnings since 1995, when Fiji had the highest export earnings of more than $279 million.
Savou said the decline in sugar production is the main factor for the huge decrease in sugar export earnings.
They are forecasting over $166 million in export earnings into the country this year.
