The Interim Sugar Minister Mahendra Chaudhry said the sugar Industry will still take a couple of years before it can stand on its own feet and till then Fiji would have to continue to import sugar to meet its quota.
In an exclusive interview with Village News Chaudhry stresses that the continuing land lease issues and mill breakdowns caused major hiccups this year and they will import more sugar this year as they do not expect major improvements.
Chaudhry adds that without solving land lease problems, it will be impossible to revive the industry. He is hoping that the proposed peoples charter will provide a platform for solutions to the long stand land problems.
Meanwhile, Chaudhry has confirmed the mill upgrade program which was initiated under the SDL led Government has resumed and is expected to be completed before this year’s crushing season.
