Despite Fiji's suspension from the Forum, Fiji is being allowed to chair a Ministerial Meeting in Tonga next week.

This has been confirmed by Works Ministry spokesperson Sainiana Waqainabete who said Transport and Works Minister Timoci Natuva has been invited to attend the second regional meeting of Maritime Transport Ministers which is fully funded by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community.

Waqainabete has indicated that Fiji is the chair of the working committee for this Forum.

She said this is to indicate how important Fiji is to the region, despite the suspension, as SPC is going ahead with Fiji being involved.

The objective of the meeting is to assist regional governments in addressing issues all over the maritime sector in the region, in particular on topics such as status of transport, ministerial communique implementation, regional agreements on search and rescue, maritime security and commodity trade.
