Fiji suspended from Forum
This was confirmed by the Chair of the Pacific Islands Forum and Premier of Niue, Honorable Toke Talagi.
In a statement today, Hon Toke Talagi said that with considerable sorrow and disappointment, he confirms that the suspension of the current military regime in the Republic of Fiji Islands, from full participation in the Pacific Islands Forum with immediate effect from today, 2nd May, 2009.
Hon Talagi adds, the decision was agreed unanimously between all Forum leaders at a Retreat in Port Moresby on January this year, responding to Commodore Frank Bainimarama's failure to address constructively by the 1st May, 2009 the expectations of Forum Leaders to return Fiji to democratic governance in an acceptable time-frame.
Meanwhile Acting Prime Minister, Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum said the statement is regrettable however the Government will carry out its own assessment and find other alternatives.
Sayed Khaiyum said the announcement was made by a press statement without any formal notification by the Forum at 11.10 this morning.
