While latest statistics reveal some imrprovement in exports and decrease in imports, the trade imbalance remains a major concern with the economy remaining dependant on imports.

The Bureau of Statistics Merchandise Trade figures reveal that Fiji's total imports for the month of September stood at $220.3 million dollars, while exports totalled $110.9 million.

However, there is some good signs as imports decreased in September compared to August by 20 percent while domestic exports increased by $30.8 million.

The latest statistics show that Fiji's imports from Sigapore, Australia, New Zealand decreased while more items were purchased from China and Thailand.

It also shows that sugar and mineral water exports to the United Kingdom increased while, re-¬exports for September totalled $25.1 million with petroleum products sold to visiting ships, aircraft and to neighbouring Pacific Island states earned $17 million.

The Bureau also reveals that as at September, the Trade Deficit amounted to $109.4 million.
