Fiji has been selected to host a European Union office for development in the Pacific Islands.

Senior Foreign Ministry officials have confirmed to Fijivillage that the news was relayed to them by Fiji's Permanent Representative to the UN, Peceli Vocea.

The EU's Centre of Development for Enterprise will be based in Suva.

It is understood that other capitals like Apia, Port Moresby and Port Vila had also put in their bids to host the office.

However, Suva was chosen yesterday.

The Centre of Development for Enterprise will be a regional centre serving the Pacific island countries.

Fijivillage has received confirmation that Fiji's Foreign Affairs Minister, Ratu Inoke Kubuabola had written to the EU inviting them to set up the regional centre in Suva.

Meanwhile earlier today, Ratu Inoke had another round of talks with NZ Foreign Minister, Murray McCulley.

McCulley is in the country this weekend to hold further dialogue after talks with Ratu Inoke and Australian Foreign Minister, Stephen Smith in Canberra earlier this month.

Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama had earlier confirmed to Fijivillage that one of the first issues that will be discussed during the talks will be the lifting of the travel sanctions to ensure that well qualified and professional people can take up positions to help Fiji move forward.
