Fiji opened their Pacific Nations Cup campaign with a comfortable 22 points to 8 win over Japan yesterday in Lautoka.
The Fijians could only muster a 3-0 half time lead in a tight match which was a direct contrast to the 40 points to 39 thriller of last year.
Coach Samu Domoni Junior said most of his players came together with just a few days to the game and it did affect their performance in the first half.
Domoni said they will have a lot of improvement to make before the second game against Tonga next weekend.
His Japan counterpart, John Kirwan rued the mistakes by his players in his second half which cost them the game.
Fiji left for Samoa last night for next weekend=s game where they will meet Tonga.
