43 years and three constitutions later, we finally have a constitution that is worthy of the Fijian people.

Those are the words of Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama as he addressed world leaders in the United Nations General Assembly earlier yesterday.

Commodore Bainimarama said the constitution focuses on genuine democracy and equal citizenry.

The Prime Minister said the government is now bringing in laws to ensure that no one is a second class citizen in their own country.

He also said that the 1987 and 2000 coups were one of the most shameful episodes of our history.

Commodore Bainimarama has also told the UN General Assembly that Fiji is now preparing for free and fair elections next year.

He said many modern stable democracies have gone through their own turbulent periods but it is unfortunate that some countries did not assist Fiji in bringing true democracy for the people.
