Fiji left out of list

Vijay Narayan: The European Union (EU) has announced here in Tonga today that it has granted an increase of up to 25% in aid to Pacific/ACP states that have presented appropriate and credible documents and action plans. European Commission Director General for Development and Relations with the ACP states Stefano Manservisi says 13 Pacific island countries apart from Fiji and Timor Leste will sign Country-Strategy papers here in Tonga on Thursday. Manservisi says this was translated into an additional 43 million Euros being added to their Indicative programmes. The Director General says they will make decisions on Fiji in due course while Timor Leste will follow as soon as possible. Meanwhile, Manservisi says the EU welcomes the political leadership the Pacific Islands forum has shown in dealing with Fiji’s crisis. He said the work of the Eminent Persons Group was instrumental for the commitments which Fiji agreed to in Brussels on 18th April this year. Manservisi stresses that no solution to Fiji’s instability will be designed by the EU. He says the necessary political solution has to come from Fiji itself.
Mensavisi also said that the European Union will not help design solutions to Fiji's political problems and Fiji must find these solutions itself through discussions with the Pacific Leaders.
However, He confirms that he has told Interim Finance Minister Mahendra Chaudhry that the $4 million allocated for the Sugar replanting programme which was suspended last month will be released soon.
